Syn. Pl. Glum. 1: 238 (1854), non A. Br.; Gen. Gram.: 319 (1986).- Type-species: Loudetia elegand A. Br. (= L. simplex).

Description:

* Perennial, rarely annual herbs.

* Inflorescence an open or contracted panicle, bearing single or paired spikelets.

* Spikelets brown. Glumes unequal. Lower lemma 3-nerved; upper lemma glabrescent to pilose, 2-toothed; callus oblong to linear, truncate, 2-toothed or obliquely pungent; palea keels thickened.

Genus with 26 species of savanna woodland.
