Description:
* Caespitose annual or perennial herbs. Leaves broad or narrow, flat, or rolled; ligule a fringe of hairs.
* Inflorescence paniculate or a single raceme of triads, open or contracted. Spikelets usually in triads, pedicellate; pedicels within a triad usually connate at the base.
* Spikelets often large, brown; callus hairy, long, narrowly conical and pungent. Glumes more or less equal, long relative to the adjacent lemmas, obtuse to acuminate or rostrate. Upper lemma pubescent, 2 -lobed with a geniculate awn from the sinus; palea awnless, 2-keeled.
