Description:
* Tufted perennial. Leaves often basal.
* Inflorescence a narrow, rufous or tawny paniclenwith several racemes appressed along a central axis. Racemes short, dense, fragile, bearing pairs of similar spikelets. Internodes short, sometimes clavate.
* Sessile spikelet bisexual, bearded with rufous hairs from the callus. Lower glume chartaceous to coriaceous, broadly convex. Upper lemma entire awnless; stamens 3. Pedicelled spikelet smaller than sessile.
Genus of tropical Africa and tropical America with 7 species.
