Description:
* Annual or perennial, mostly rambling. Leaves sometimes aromatic.
* Inflorescence a delicate panicle with subdivided branches bearing short racemes of 1-5(-8) sessile spikelets and no homogamous pairs; internodes and pedicels hyaline and translucent between thickened margins. Callus of sessile spikelet obtuse; lower glume cartilaginous, broadly convex to slightly concave, acute to obtuse; upper lemma entire with a glabrous or puberulous awn. Pedicelled spikelet usually well-developed.
* Sessile spikelet callus obtuse; lower glume cartilaginous, broadly convex to concave. Upper lemma entire with a glabrous or puberulous awn. Pedicelles spikelet usually well developed.
A genus of c. 14 species of eastern Africa, Asia and Australia.
