Description:

* Erect rhizomatous perennial grass 0.2-0.8 m high, with old bladeless dry sheaths at the base. Leaves 8-18(-30) cm long and 2.5-6 cm broad, oblong, base broadly rounded into a short petiole, tip acuminate, with fine distinct nerves radiating from the base, glabrous with scabrid margins; ligule membranous, 2-3 mm long; sheath somewhat compressed with prominent auricles fused into the ligule, glabrous.

* Inflorescence a terminal sometimes branched raceme of 5-25 cm long with 2-9 spikelets on short pedicels.

* Spikelets linear lanceolate, 2 -9 cm long and 5-7 mm large. Lemmas imbricate, leaving the  rhachis visible, lanceolate, 7-9 mm long, pubescent all over; paleas slightly shorter, bicarenate with 4 intercarinal nerves.

Distribution West Africa: Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon.

Distribution world-wide: Gabon.

Note:  Similar to G. oblonga Hutch. ex Clayton.
