Description: Coarse tufted perennial, 1.5-3 m. Culms sometimes prop-rooted at the base. Leaves variable, from a bladeless terete false petiole to long lineair with a petiolate basis, glaucous, glabrous to finely hairy, scabrid margins; ligule a short brown membrane; external false ligule often present as a membranous rim, with or without a hairy fringe; sheath glabrous, sometimes hairy.
