Description: 

Loosely tufted or solitary-stemmed erect annual 0.5-1 m high. Culms slender, weak and easily crushed. Leaves narrow linear, flat with a white midrib, glabrous, usually tightly folded and filiform, 5-45 cm long, 1-6 mm wide; base slightly or markedly narrowed, passing straight into the sheath; ligule a membrane, 2-5 mm long melted with the auricles; sheath with prominent auricles 2-5 mm long contiguous with the ligule, glabrous. Roots a fine dense mat.

* Inflorescence on sparingly branched culms with closely appressed paired spathate terminal racemes. Raceme-bases filiform, unequal, the upper 3-6 mm long, glabrous. Racemes 2-6 cm long, bearing 4-7 fertile spikelets, held by closely tangled, long awns; internodes filiform, flat, 5 mm long. Spatheole linear, 6-15 cm long. Basal spikelets 2 in lower raceme, 0 in upper raceme. Pedicels filiform ciliate.

* Spikelets densely rufous-hairy. Sessile spikelets linear, 5-12 mm long; callus cuneate, 1-4 mm long, pungent, pilose with white or red hairs. Glumes coriaceous, the lower with a deep median groove, the upper boat-shaped. Upper lemma shortly bi-lobed with a black pubescent geniculate awn, 4-10 cm long with twisted dark brown column with yellow brown hairs of 1 mm long. Pedicelled spikelets 5-11 mm long; glumes coriaceous, with 1-9 mm long awn. Anthers bright red.
