Description: Robust erect caespitose perennial of 1-1.5 m long. Culms stout, erect, 2-3-noded. Leaves long linear, attenuate, 25-50 cm long and 2-5 mm wide, flat or rolled, glabrous with scabrous margins; base leading straight into the sheath; ligule a short membrane of 0.5 mm long; sheath glabrous. Roots stout.

* Inflorescence composed of single terete racemes of 20-40 cm long; rhachis fragile at the nodes,; internodes cuneate, 6-8 mm long and 2 mm wide; tip transverse, crateriform. Spikelets in pairs. Pedicels linear, foliaceous, curved, glabrous.

* Sessile spikelets oblong, dorsally compressed, 5-7 mm long; callus truncate, glabrous with central peg attached transversely. Lower glume oblong, coriaceous, smooth, muticous; upper glume oblong, membranous, muticous. Lower lemma lanceolate, hyaline, acute. Pedicelled spikelets rudimentary, comprising of 2 subequal glumes 0-1 mm long.

Distribution West Africa and world-wide: Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana.
