Description: Tall perennial, often glaucous, 1.0-3.5 mhigh , fastigiate habit, rhizomatous; readily recognised by the dense fascicles or tufts of short leaves developing on the nodes after flowering. Culms slightly compressed below, often with stout rhizomes. Leaves with false petiole at the base, usually glabrous with white midrib and scabrid margins, sometimes leaves reduced to a smooth whip-like false petiole with or without a tiny flag-like blade; ligule short, brownish, membranous often with false ligule consisting of short membranous rim with or without a tufted hairy fringe; sheath glabrous,
