Description:

* Perennial with cataphylls and elongated rhizomes of 1.5-3 m high. Culms erect, spongy, 25 mm diameter. Leaves lanceolate, 0.2-1.5 m long and 3.5-10 cm wide, venation oblique with cross veins, scaberulous, acute with a false petiole of 2-10 cm long; ligule a eciliate membrane, 4-8 mm long, scarious

* Inflorescence a oblong panicle of 25-35 cm long and 4-8 mm wide; lower branches verticellate. Pedicels bi-bracteate (obscure rims).

* Spikelets ovate, laterally compressed, 3.5-4.5 mm long, with one fertile floret, disarticulating below the floret. Glumes obscure or absent. Lemma ovate, membranous, 5 prominent rough veins, acute; palea ovate, membranous. Anthers 4.
