Description:
* Caespitose perennial up to 2 m high. Culms. Leaves 10-40 cm long and 4-10 mm wide, fairly broad; ligule usually short, 1-3(5) mm long, truncate; sheaths commonly pubescent to pilose above
* Inflorescence of (1)3-4(10) racemes, subdigitate or borne upon a central axis 2-7(12) cm long. Racemes 15-30 cm long; rhachis internodes and pedicels glabrous.
* Sessile spikelet narrowly oblong; inferior glume 6-10 mm long, glabrous except for the spinulose to ciliolate keels, not muricate, acute to bidenticulate (very rarely biaristulate) at the apex. Pedicelled spikelet 2-7 mm long, with an awn 2-3.5(5) cm long.
