Description:
* Caespitose perennial of 0.4-1.2 m high. Culms erect. Leaves 5-20 cm long and 4-9 mm wide; ligule a fringe of hairs.
* Inflorescence an open oblong panicle of 5-12 cm long with 4-35 triads of spikelets; branches capillary, flexuous, hispid with tubercle-based hairs. Spikelets in threes, in a close cluster; pedicels filiform, subequal, 0.5-1 mm long.
* Spikelets lanceolate, 6-12 mm long; callus 1 mm long, pilose with longer hairs above, truncate. Glumes chartaceous, dark brown, hairy on veins with tubercle-based hairs; lower glume lanceolate, 4-11 mm long, hispid, acute; upper glume lanceolate, 6-12 mm long, hispid, acuminate. Lower lemma similar to upper glume; upper lemma oblong, 3-3.5 mm long, coriaceous; lobes awned, with a tuft of hairs on each lobe; principal awn from a sinus, geniculate, 15-30 mm long with twisted column; lateral awns arising on apex of lobes, 4-8 mm long; palea keels narrowly winged. Anthers 3; 2-3 mm long.
