Description:
* Caespitose perennial with stolons of 0.1-0.4 m high. Culms geniculately ascending and rooting from the lower nodes. Leaves linear, 1-10 cm long and 0.5-5 mm wide; ligule an eciliate membrane of 1-6 mm long; sheaths smooth.
* Inflorescence an open or contracted linear to lanceolate panicle of 1-15 cm long and 0.5-2.5 cm wide, open in flower, afterwards contracted; primary branches verticellate at most nodes, scabrous. Pedicels 0.5-2 mm long.
* Spikelets lanceolate, 2-3 mm long, disarticulating below the floret, no rhachilla extension; callus pubescent. Glumes similar, longer than the floret, shiny, gaping, 2-3 mm long, acute. Lemma elliptic to oblong, 1.5-2.3 mm long, obtuse., very blunt, finely 5-nerved, usually awnless. Anthers 3, 1-1.5 mm long; stigmas 2.

Distribution world-wide: Morocco, Algeria, Tunesia, Libya, Europe, Asia, introduced elsewhere.
Note: Extremely variable grass.
