Description:

* Caespitose perennial of 0.5-1 m high. Culms erect or geniculately ascending. Leaves 10-25cm long and 2-5 mm wide, margins cartilaginous; Ligule an eciliate membrane of 2-3 mm long.

* Inflorescence a dense cylindrical spiciform panicle van 8-17 cm long, Primary branches accrescent to the central axis with oblong clusters of spikelets. Fertile spikelets 6-9, surrounded by 6-9 sterile spikelets and an involucre composed of imperfect spikelets of 4-5 mm long; base obtuse, glabrous.

* Spikelets 3-5 mm long, falling with the accessory branch structures. Lower glume absentor obscure; upper glume narrowly ovate or lanceolate, acuminate, scabrous. Lemmas as long as spikelet; lower lemma oblong, membranous,puberulous; upper lemma lanceolate, cartilaginous, acuminate.
