Description:
* Tufted perennials. Leaves linear or filiform, flat or involute tapering to a setaceous tip; ligule a ciliate rim.
* Inflorescence a solitary, one-sided raceme of biseriate, imbricate, awned spikelets appressed to the rhachis.
* Spikelets narrow, 2-3-flowered. Glumes lanceolate, membranous, terminating in a short awn-point. Lower floret hermaphrodite; lower lemma indurate, prominently awned from the sinus; upper florets male.
Genus with 17 species of the short grass savannas of the tropics.
