Description:

* Perennial or annual herbs. Culms prostrate, sometimes scrambling, with erect flowering shoots.

* Inflorescence an open or contracted panicle and often branched from all sides. Spikelets pedicellate.

* Spikelets, strongly laterally compressed and convex on one narrow side, hence oblique and trigonous, mutique, 2-flowered. Glumes and lower lemma herbaceous, veins prominent; upper glume strongly convex, 3-veined. Lower lemma, as long as spikelet, slightly convex, 5-veined; upper lemma indurate at maturity, distinctly separated from lower lemma, boat shaped, coriaceous, smooth and glossy, glabrous, with narrowly enrolled, opaque margins; upper palea indurate with margins inrolled. Caryopsis free.

Genus of Old World tropics with 11 species, in forest shade.
