Description: Perennial of 0.3-1 m high. Leaves straight or curved, scabrous, 1-2 mm wide; ligule an eciliate membrane of 0.5 mm long; sheaths longer than adjacent internode.

* Inflorescence a compound panicle of 25-30 cm long, lax with terminal and axillary racemes. Racemes single on the peduncle, exerted halfway the spatheole, 1.5-3 cm long, with 6-10 fertile spikelets each.

* Sessile spikelets lanceolate, 5-6 mm long; callus obtuse, 0.8 mm long, hairy. Lower glume coriace, light brown, pilose, 2-toothed at the tip; upper glume two-fid and one-awned; awn 5 mm long. Upper glume 3.5-3.8 mm long, hyaline, 2-fid with a geniculate awn of 15 mm long from the sinus. Pedicelled spikelets represented by barren pedicels or well-developed and longer than sessile spikelets.
