Description: Tufted perennial 1.2-2.7 m. Leaves occasionally developing false petiole and scabrous margins; ligule a distinct brownish membrane, often densely hairy behind; sheath hairy with tufts of white hairs at the apex.

* Inflorescence occasionally with solitary racemes.

* Spikelets with awns up to 3 cm.
