Description: Perennial of 1.5-2 m long. Culms erect, glabrous, 2-4 mm diameter. Leaves long-linear, up to 70 cm long and 12 mm wide, attenuate; sheaths glabrous on surface, outer margin hairy; ligule a ciliolate membrane, 0.5 mm long. Leaves 40-70 cm long and 6-12 mm wide, hairy on both sides, apex filiform.
* Inflorescence composed of 1-2 pairs of racemes on long peduncles. Racemes unilateral, 9-11 cm long; rhachis fragile, ciliate on margins; internodes columnar, 6 mm long. Spikelets squeezed between internode and pedicel. Pedicels clavate, 5 mm long with ciliate tip.
* Sessile spikelets lanceolate, 8 mm long; callus square, pilose, 1 mm long. Lower glume lanceolate, coriaceous, keeled dorsally with 5-6 lateral veins, deeply depressed. Lower lemma oblong, 7 mm long, hyaline; upper lemma lanceolate, 4.5 mm long, incised for 1/3 of the length with geniculate awn of 4 cm long from the sinus; colomn glabrous, twisted. Pedicelled spikelets well-developped, male, lanceolate, 12 mm long; glumes chartaceous, keeled, muticous.
Note: Closely related to Andropogon schirensis.
