Description:
* Very large rhizomatous perennial, up to 4 m high. Leaves glabrous, base amplexicaule, up to 50 cm long and 3-4 cm wide; ligule a short membrane.
* Inflorescence in racemes of up to 30 cm long. Female spikelets in hollows in the internode, shortly pedicelled.
* Spikelets with 2-keeled glumes, hirsute; keels scabrous.
Note: Often included in T. laxum.
Distribution West Africa: Introduced in Guinea, Sierra Leone, Cameroon.
Distribution world-wide: Central America; introduced Rwanda, Tanzania, Asia.
