Description:

Annual. Culms erect, 30-60 cm long, often smaller. Leaves 2.5-5 cm long and 0.5-1 mm wide; ligule a ciliolate membrane of 1.5 mm long.

* Inflorescence comprising only a few spikelets, linear, 10-20 cm long, terminal and axillary, enclosed by a spatheole; spatheole linear, 1.8-2.5 cm long. Spikelets in threes with one fertile sessile spikelets and 2 pedicelled sterile spikelets. Pedicels filiform, 0.2-0.4 mm long, glabrous. Companion sterile spikelets represented by barren pedicels.

* Spikelets lanceolate, subterete, 6-7 mm long; callus linear, 1.5 mm long, bearded, pungent, hairs red. Glumes dissimilar shiny; lower glume oblong, coriaceous, keel-less except near apex dentate; upper glume oblong, dentate with an awn 2-5 mm long. Lower lemma oblong, 2-3 mm long, hyaline, ciliate on the margins; upper lemma linear, 3-3.5 mm long, hyaline, 2 -fid with geniculate awn from a sinus of 45-60 mm long with twisted glabrous column.
