Annual of 1.5-2 m high. Culms 2-4 mm diameter. Leaves linear, 20-40 cm long and 2-4 mm wide, glabrous or sparsely hairy; ligule an eciliate membrane, 3-6 mm long, truncate; sheaths glabrous, auricles erect, 3-6 mm long..

* Inflorescence a scanty spathate panicle of 30 cm long, composed of terminal and axillary excerted paired racemes. Racemes erect, 3-6 cm long with 2-5 sessile fertile spikelets; bases filiform, the longer 2-4 mm long, glabrous to pilose, extended into qn oblong appendage of 2-4 mm long.

* Sessile spikelets linear, 12 mm long; callus cuneate, 2 mm long, pilose with white hairs. Lower glume oblong, coriaceous, thinner and pubescent above, keel-less, a longitudinal median groove, tip bifid. Upper lemma linear, 5 mm long, bifid with a geniculate awn of 5-7 cm long from the sinus; column twisted, pubescent.

Distribution West Africa and world-wide: CAR.
