Description:

* Annuals with erect or geniculately ascending weak culms.

* Inflorescence a narrow panicle or racemes.

* Spikelets several-flowered, disarticulating below each fertile floret ans sometimes also below pedicel ; floret-callus glabrous. Glumes very unequal, the lower minute, the upper acute to awned. Lemmas thinly coriaceous, rounded or occasionally keeled, faintly 5-nerved, narrow, tapering into a long straight awn.

Genus with 22 species, temperate and subtropical regions of northern hemisphere, introduced elsewhere.
