Description:

* Annuals. Leaves flat.

* Inflorescence in a spike-like panicle with hispidulous branches.

* Spikelets several-flowered. Glumes subequal or unequal, keeled with hyaline margins, usually shorter than lemmas. Lemmas membranous, keeled with hyaline margins, narrowly oblong in side view, obtuse to acute, with a straight awnlet of up to 3 mm long mounted high on the back or just below the tip.

A genus with about 10 species of dry weedy places; northern Africa and the Middle East.
