Description:
* Annuals or perennials. Leaves linear, flat ; ligule membranous.
* Inflorescence a contracted to spiciform, often bristly panicle with numerous small spikelets. Spikelets falling entire with the pedicel or part of it.
* Spikelets one-flowered, often remaining with a part of the pedicel as a stipe. Glumes similar, longer than the florets, chartaceous, scabrid, often with a slender awn from the truncate tip. Lemma hyaline, 5-nerved, rounded, the midnerve usually extending in a fine awn.
Genus with 18 species, warm temperate and tropical mountainous regions; damp places.
