Description:
* Tufted or rhizomatous annuals or perennials and then the lowest culm internode sometimes swollen. Leaves linear, flat; ligule membranous.
* Inflorescence a contracted spiciform to capitate panicle.
* Spikelets ovate, the 2 lower florets reduced to rudimentary lemmas; above one fertile floret and up to 6 rudimentary florets. Glumes equal, exceeding and enclosing lemma, keeled, the keel usually winged. Sterile lemma usually subulate and up to half as long as fertile lemma; fertile lemma polished, coriaceous, the margins not overlapping, acute, awnless.
Genus of the temperate regions, Mediterranean; dry weedy places and on damp soils.
