Description:

* Aquatic or semi-aquatic annuals or perennials, caespitose or rhizomatous. Leaves membranous, linear and inrolled, relatively long and acute.

* Inflorescence open, composed of several to numerous racemes scattered around a central axis. Racemes slender, straight or flexuous, secund.

* Spikelets with 6-20 florets, narrow, acuminate, often rounded, biseriate disarticulating between the florets. Glumes 1-nerved, persistent, shorter than or about as long as the florets, apices acute. Lemmas 3-nerved, rounded or flattened on the back, often with a dark spot near the base, acute to truncate or bifid, mucronate to awned.

Genus with 18 species in the tropics and subtropics.
