Description:
* Cespitose perennial of 0.3-0.9 m high. Culms erect or ascending. Leaves flat or involute, 5-20 cm long and 2-3 mm wide ; ligule hyaline, 2-4 mm long.
* Inflorescence an open lanceolate panicle, loose or dense of 2-25 cm long . Branches flexuous and filiforme, up to 4 cm long. Spikelets at the tip of the branches.
* Spikelets with one fertile floret and a barren rhachilla extension of 3.5-5.5 mm long, violet. Glumes persistant, longer than the lemmas, lancolate, membranous, the midvein scaberulous, 3.5-5 mm long, acute. Lemma oblong, 2.5-3 mm long, with a dorsal twisted geniculate awn of 3-7 mm long, lateral veins excurrent, apex truncate ; palea as long as lemma, 2-veined, hyaline.
