Description:
* Caespitose perennial in dense tufts, 0.3-0.9 m high; lower sheaths fibrous. Culms erect, 1-2-noded; nodes black. Leaves glossy green, involute, 0.3-0.5 m long and 1-2 mm broad; ligule a fringe of hairs.
* Inflorescence a purple elliptic to oblong panicle of 10-30 cm long; branches up to 8 cm long, not verticillate. Spikelets on glabrous pedicels of 3-6 mm long.
* Spikelets 3-4 mm long and 1-2 mm broad, open, 3-7-flores, violet; terminal florets reduced, rachéole well visible between the florets. Glumes lanceolate, glabrous, acuminate; lower glume 2 mm long; upper lemma 2-2.5 mm long. Lemmas ovate, keeled, 3-veined, purple, pilose with white hairs of 0.5 mm long at the margins; paleas glabrous, 1.5 mm long. Anthers 3, 0.7-1 mm long. Stigmates white.
