Description: 

Caespitose annual of 1.5-2.5 m high. Culms erect, 2-5 mm diameter, nodes purple, sometimes with stilt roots. Leaves linear lanceolate, 20-40 cm long and 2-10 mm wide, acuminate, more or less narrowed at the base into a thin pseudo-petiole; ligule membranous, glabrous, 3-10 mm long; sheaths glabrous, slightly keeled with erect auricles of 3-20 mm long.

* Inflorescence a lax spathate panicle of 6-20 cm long with terminal and axillary paired racemes at the base embraced by a subtending leaf. Spatheole lanceolate, 5-8 cm long. Racemes 4-6 cm long, robust and pilose; rhachis fragile, puberulous on the surface and ciliate on the margins; internodes thick, 4 mm long, widened at the tip. Pedicels 3-4 mm long, pilose, deeply bifid at the tip.

* Sessile spikelets elliptic lanceolate, 5.5-10 mm long; callus obtuse, pubescent, 1 mm long. Lower glume coriaceous, keeled laterally and a deep median groove, hairy in the groove and more or less all over with white hairs up to 1.5 mm long; upper glume boat-shaped, mucronate to 2-awned, densely pubescent with ciliate margins and glabrous towards the tip. Upper lemma hyaline, oblong, bifid for 1/3 with a geniculate awn of 15-28 mm long from the sinus. Anthers 3, 3 mm long. Pedicelled spikelets 5-7 mm long, pilose; lower glume with an awn of 2-10 mm long; upper glume mucronate.
