Description: 

Tufted perennial, 0.8-3.6 m high; culms with the lower nodes often stiffly bearded and prop-rooted; roots coarse. Leaves up to 1 m long and  3 cm broad, tapering to a long conspicuous grooved false petiole, usually densely velvety hairy when young to glabrous at maturity, white grooved midrib, scabrid margins; drying dark pink; ligule short membranous and yellow-brown, densely hairy behind; sheath densely hairy, esp. the basal ones.

* Spikelets conspicuously hairy with very fine short awns. Pedicelled spikelet with awn of up to 6 mm.
