Description: 

Caespitose perennial of 5-15 cm high. Culms ascending, internodes distally wooly. Leaves involute, filiform, stiff, 2-3 cm long and 0.5 mm wide, curved; ligule a fringe of hairs.

* Inflorescence an open linear to lanceolate panicle of 5-7 cm long. Spikelets solitary, pedicelled.

* Spikelets lanceolate, subterete, 12 mm long; callus pubescent, 2 cm long, pungent. Glumes lanceolate, membranous, longer than the floret; lower glume 10 mm long; upper glume 12 mm long, acuminate. Lemma 4-5 mm long, coriaceous, 3-veined, margins convolute; awn 3-branched, with a 3-4 cm long plumose limb,;column straight or slightly twisted column, deciduous, 5-10 mm long, abscissing from the top of the lemma; lateral branches 17 mm long, glabrous. Caryopsis 3 mm long.

Note: In F. Egypt 4: 231 (2005) treated as synonym of S. plumosa .
