Description:

Caespitose perennial of 0.3-0.6 m high in dense tufts with remains of old sheaths at the base. Culms slender, erect. Leaves mainly basal, linear, flat or convolute, 5-20 cm long and 0.5-2 mm wide, glabrous or hairy; ligule membranous, 1-2 mm wide.

* Inflorescence a terminal pair of racemes and 1-2 axillary pairs.Spatheole linear, 4-10 cm long. Racemes in paires, 2-3 cm long, with 4-6 spikelet pairs each; rhachis fragile, with white hairs of 0.5-2 mm long on the nodes and margins; bases filiform, the longest 4.5-8 mm long, almost glabrous. Pedicels and internodes linear, 4 mm long. Lower raceme with 1-2 pairs of homogamous spikelets; lower raceme without homogamous spikelets.

* Sessile spikelets lanceolate, 4.5-6.5 mm long, light green; callus cuneate, 1.5 mm long, pubescent. Lower glume coriaceous, grey,with a slight median depression and keel-less, glabrous or pubescent. Upper lemma linear, membranous, with a geniculate awn of 8-15 mm long from the sinus, column hirsute with brown hairs of 0.3-0.4 mm long. Pedicelled spikelets lanceolate, glabrous, 5-6 mm long with an awn of 2-11 mm long. Homogamous spikelets similar to sessile ones but muticous, 6-10 mm long.

Distribution West Africa: Cameroon.

Distribution world-wide: Congo and DRC.
