Description:
* Tufted perennial of 0.5-1 m high, Butt sheaths becoming fibrous at maturity. Culms erect. Leaves linear, 20-40 cm long and 3-5 mm wide, acuminate; ligule an eciliate membrane.
* Inflorescence in a single raceme of 6-8 cm long. Raceme with a fragile rhachis, pilose; internodes columnar, 8-10 mm long. Pedicels oblong, flattened, 5 mm long.
* Sessile spikelets ovate, 8 mm long; callus cuneate, 1 mm long, obtuse, bearded, hairs 3 mm long. Glume elliptic, chartaceous, purple, keel-less, acute; upper glume elliptic. Lower lemma obovate, 7 mm long, membranous, ciliate on margins; upper lemma lanceolate, 8 mm long, hyaline, tip pubescent. Pedicelled spikelets elliptic, 7-8 mm long; glumes coriaceous with an awn of 5-15 mm long.
