Description: 

Annual of 1.5-2 m high. Culms erect, 4 mm diameter. Leaves 6-12 mm wide, glabrous, but hairy around the ligule; ligule a narrow cioliolated membrane of 0.7 mm longs.

* Inflorescence a loose spathate  panicle of 60-80 cm long with paired racemes,subtended by a spatheole. Spatheole linear, 7-8 mm long, glabrous; peduncle glabrous. Racemes 3-4 cm long, one sessile, one pedicelled with a hirsute filiform base of 3-4 mm long. Rhachis fragile, glabrous on the margins.

* Spikelets oblong-elliptical, 10-12 mm long, pubescent. Awn 5-7.5 cm long, bigeniculate, with a hispid colomn.

Distribution West Africa and world-wide: Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Benin.
