Eragrostis cenolepis Clayton

Description:

* Perennial with dense greyish green tufts of 0.8-1 m tall. Culms straight, simple. Leaves linear, stiff, mainly basal, 20 cm long and 3 mm wide, glabrous, longly attenuate; ligule a very narrow rim of hairs.

* Inflorescence an ovate, pale green violet loose panicle of 10-20 cm long and 5-7 cm wide. Branches 5-8 cm long, distant, the pedicels hairlike, spikelets trembling

* Spikelets glabrous, violet, green towards the center. Glumes acute, 1 mm long. Lemmas: two lower ones steriles, 1.5-2 mm long, without palea; 6-7 upper lemmas 3 mm long; palea hyaline, 2.2 mm long. Anthers violet, 0.6 mm long. Achene dark-brown, wattled surface, 0.6 mm long and 0.3 mm wide.                      

Note:  E cenolepis and E. plurigluma closely related.

Distribution West Africa and world-wide: Guinea, Sierra Leone, Togo, Nigeria, Cameroon.
