Description:
* Caespitose perennial with green or purple butt sheaths, 0.9-1.1 m high. Culms erect, internodes glaucous. Leaves convolute, 15-30 cm long and 2-3 mm wide, stiff ; ligule a fringe of hairs of 0.2-0.3 mm long.
* Inflorescence an open elliptic to ovate panicle, 18-25 cm long ; branches ascending, up to 10 cm long, capillary and flexuous, bearded in the axils. Spikelets on pedicels of 10-18 mm long.
* Spikelets with 3 sterile florets at the base and 5-6 fertile florets and reduced florets towards the tip, elliptic or ovate, laterally compressed, 2-2.5 mm long and 0.8-1 mm wide ; rhacilla persistent, paleas fall at the same time as the lemmas. Lower glume lanceolate, 0,8 mm long, keeled ; upper glume 1 mm long, keeled, lateral veins absent. Basal lemmas barren, without paleas, separately deciduous ; fertile lemmas ovate, 1.8-2 mm long, membranous, keeled and 3-veined, obtuse ; palea half as long as the lemma.
