Description:

* Slender, loosely tufted perennial of 0.5-1 m high. Culms weak, ascending. Leaves mostly basal, linear, flat or folded, 6-25 cm long and 1-2 mm wide; Ligule an eciliate membrane of 0.5 mm long; sheaths smooth, glabrous.

* Inflorescence a narrow, open panicle of 15-30 cm long, erect or slightly nodding ; branches capillary, few-spiculate.

* Spikelets 2-5-flowered, lanceolate, 8-13 mm long, purple-tinged. Glumes lanceolate, chartaceous, the lower 3-4.5 mm long, the upper 4-6.5 mm long. Lemmaelliptic, 6-7 mm long, chartaceous with an awn of 7-12 mm long. Anthers 3, 1.2-2 mm long.   

Distribution West Africa: Cameroon, South Sudan

Distribution world-wide: Ethiopia, Uganda and C and E Africa.
