Description:

* Stoloniferous perennial, glaucus. Culms branched geniculately ascending. Leaves coriaceous, narrow lanceolate, rigid and with an acerated tip, ligule a short membrane fringed with hairs.

*  Inflorescence a contracted panicle with the spikelets densely imbricate in short globose or oblong spiculate raceme(s), appressed to a central axis.

* Spikelets several- to many-flowered. Glumes shorter than lemmas, keeled. Lemmas chartaceous, strongly 9-11-nerved, rounded on the back, glabrous or pilose on the margins, apiculate. Caryopsis broadly ellipsoid, glabrous.

Mediterranean genus with about 4 species adapted to saline conditions, two species in West Africa.
