Description:

* Tufted annual of 0.3-0.6 m high. Culms erect or ascending, sometimes rooting at the lower nodes. Leaves flat, 4-16 cm long and 3-5 mm broad, with long scattered hairs, especially near the ligule, tapering at the apex.

* Inflorescence in 1-4 (usually 2) racemes, paired or closely digitate, embraced below by a spathaceous upper leaf-sheath.

* Spikelets 3-4-flowered, 2 awned. Glumes sickle-shape, lanceolate; lower glume 3-4.5 mm long, golden brown, papery; upper glume 6-8 mm long, pale brown, membranous. Lowest lemma boat-shaped, dark brown, 3-4 mm long, with an awn of 4-6 mm long from near the tip, appressed ciliate on the keel and with spreading ciliate; 2-4 th lemmas condensed and reduced to a glabrous clavate appendage projecting from the side of the lowest lemma and bearing a single awn 2.5-4 mm long.

Distribution world-wide: Ethiopia, DRC and E Africa.
